(Half Board Accommodation)

From £308.00 per person

Monday: Sizergh Castle and Garden

Our journey takes us North to the edge of the Lake District where we will stop at Sizergh Castle and Garden (National Trust). The Medieval castle dating from Elizabethan times stands proud within a rich and beautiful Garden with ponds and a lake together with a collection of hardy ferns.  The house itself contains some fine furniture and portraits.

Leaving the Castle mid-afternoon we travel into the Scottish Lowlands where we will find the Tinto House Hotel which lies in the countryside just outside of the small market town of Biggar in Lanarkshire.  The Tinto House Hotel will be our home for the next 4 nights.

Tuesday: Peebles and Floors Castle

Morning visit to Peebles on the banks of the River Tweed, where we will have approximately 3 hours to explore the little market town. As you stroll down the length of the High Street you will see houses and shops that were built between medieval times and today. Set in the Tweed valley the scenery that surrounds the town is quite stunning.

In the early afternoon we travel to Floors Castle near Kelso. The castle wass built by the 1st Duke of Roxburgh in 1721 to a design by John Adam. It is now the largest inhabited castle in Scotland with State Rooms filled with priceless European paintings tapestries and furnishings.  In the grounds the Star Plantation and the walled garden bring together a combination of flowering shrubs, ornamental trees, flowers and fruit trees to produce a spectacle of colour.

Wednesday: Royal Yacht Britannia and Edinburgh

Royal Yacht Britannia

This morning we drive north towards Leith on the banks of the River Forth where we will visit the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Yacht was not only the place where the Royal Family lived when visiting foreign parts but also a place where they could entertain a host of important dignitaries and guests. On arrival you will be issued with an audio guide which will guide you around the ship, tell you about the various state rooms together with some anecdotal stories associated with visits to far off lands.

In the afternoon the coach will take you into the centre of Edinburgh where you will have approximately 4½ hours to do as you please.

Thursday: Bannockburn and Culross

The Battle of Bannockburn was undoubtedly of one of the most spectacular battles of the Scottish Wars of Independence. Although the struggle against the English was to continue for some 13 years more, the Scottish victory was of enormous importance as it secured the future of the throne for Robert Bruce, King of Scots. This morning we visit the Heritage Centre built on the site of this famous battle bordering the River Forth near Stirling which tells of the epic battle in 1314.

In the afternoon we visit the Royal Burgh of Culross, a town that time has past by. It gives a unique insight of what a Royal Burgh around the 16th- 17th centuries would have been like. Culross Palace (SNT) is a 16th century merchant’s house noted for its internal painted walls. Our visit will include a tour of the Town House and the Palace with free time to explore the rest of the town at your leisure.

Our return journey to the hotel this evening will take us over the Forth Road Bridge.

Friday: Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill

After our final breakfast in the hotel we will drive south towards the Lake District where we will visit Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (NT). This is a lovely garden that is renowned for its herbs and old English fruit.

Acorn Bank provides an ideal stopping place for lunch, it will however be necessary to pre-order your food in advance if you wish to eat at the property. Menus and prices will be provided before the final holiday payment is due and the money, if you take up the option, will be collected with the final payment.

Our arrival back at Birmingham Town Hall is estimated to be around 7p.m.
