Friday 29th November: Bristol Christmas Market
Depart Birmingham and take a leisurely drive down to Bristol..
Arriving in the Shopping Quarter of Bristol you will be near the heart of the German Christmas Market that will be in full flow. If you are not a fan of Markets then the Harbour area and the Cathedral is within walking distance. If you haven't visited the SS Great Britain and the Brunell Exhibition then it is a sort bus or ferry ride (or long walk) to the far end of the Harbour area. Timetables are not yet available for the tourist bus that takes you past the SS Great Britain, Bristol Museums, Bristol Zoo and out to Clifton (2018 timetable shows a service every 75 minutes and tour duration of approximately 1 hour 15 minutes You can check details here).
Leaving the City Centre we head for our hotel on the edge of Bristol in the Filton Area.
Saturday 30th November: Longleat Festival of Light
Departing the hotel the coach will first take you to Bradford on Avon. Nestling in the valley of the River Avon this town has been touched by many historic periods. The Romans, Saxons, Normans, Georgians and Victorians have all left their mark here. It is a lovely town guaranteed to get your cameras clicking. Pity we will only have a couple of hours here as you will not see everything and want to come back for a return visit at some time in the future.
In the afternoon we travel on to Longleat where the Elizabethan House will be decorated for Christmas. It is one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture and Grandness in the country set in the middle of a Capability Brown Landscape. During the Festival of Light you will be able to visit the ground floor rooms. As dusk falls the park around the house is transformed into a magical place of illuminations that will make you gasp. Click here for a film taken at the 2017 Festival of light.
Please note this tour does not include the Longleat Safari Park.
Sunday 1st December: Tyntesfield (NT)
On the final day we travel to the National Trust Property of Tyntesfield a grand Victorian Building just outside of Bristol. This was a family home and for four generations they lived here making their own entertainment including little play-lets for the general amusement of the household. The family did not throw anything away and it took the National Trust a long time to just catalogue what was there (including some of the costumes used for the plays). It is unlikely that any plays will be taking place during our visit but the house will certainly have the flavour of a Victorian Christmas on display.
