Tucked onto the side of the Peak District Chesterfield is one of the gateways into this area of outstanding beauty.
As you approach Chesterfield you can't help but notice the Church of Saint Mary and All Saints. The church is the largest in Derbyshire almost Cathedral like but its most striking feature is its twisted spire . The spire today is a wooden frame clad in Lead. The original Spire was clad in wood shingles which were much lighter than the replacement lead. The theory of the spire twisting out of alignment is that the lead on the South side heats up and expands on sunny days to a much higher temperature than on the North and as there is no cross bracing within the structure this causes the twist. The locals however have much more elaborate stories which your courier will tell you on the journey. The local Museum will tell you a little bit more about the church and its construction as well as the History of the Town. Its Roman origins are due to its location sitting next to Ryknield Way one of the main Roman Roads in England. It also tells you about one of its famous residents George Stevenson considered to be the "Father of the Railways"
Chesterfield boasts a very large Market Square and on a Thursday the Flea Market will be in full flow and hopefully you can pick up a bargain whilst enjoying the ambience of the square It is not unusual to have something like 150 stalls making it one of the biggest flea markets in Englland.
The main streets in Chesterfield are fairly accessible
The coach will drop you off in he bus station about 5 minutes walk (sligutly uphill) walk from the Market and 10 minutes from the Church
