One of the famous little trains of Wales the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway has become a tourist attraction. The 2 foot 6 inch gauge railway wends its way through a Valley from Welshpool, eventually following the path of the River Banwy towards its terminus at Llanfair Caereinion a distance of 8 miles. Originally opened in 1903 it was constructed to serve the local communities along the route for both passenger use and for getting goods to markets from the local farms. The Narrow gauge was ideal for navigating the sharp curves on the line and dealing with some of the gradients.
From 1931 the line was relegated to "Goods Only" and was eventually close in 1956. Rising from the ashes, due to an enthusiasts group, the line has been progressively re-opened allowing the thrill of steam and the countryside views to be enjoyed once again.
